In 2022, Omega has a big surprise in store for its loyal audience and the global community of professionals and divers alike: a collection of dive watches capable of diving to an incredible depth of six kilometers underwater! This is the new Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep watch that we introduced you a few months ago. here. The new Ultra Deeps were based on an experimental model that Omega built in 2019 on behalf of Victor Vescovo, a daring explorer with the goal of reaching the deepest point on Earth at 10,935 meters in the Mariana Islands. Trench in the Pacific Ocean. Omega had only six months to design and build a reliable watch that could emerge from this adventure unscathed. And he succeeded. Drawing inspiration from the rich DNA of the Seamaster, he created the original Seamaster Ultra Deep dive model, which successfully met the highest demands of this underwater mission. Imagine diving into the abyss, attached to a Vescovo submarine, to a depth equivalent to 36 Eiffel Towers or 28.5 Empire State Buildings, subjected to extreme polar cold and a terrifying pressure of 1103.16 atmospheres, and managed to get out unscathed and fully operational!

Heritage sea master
Of course, it is impossible to achieve such a high level of know-how without a long history of diving watches. And Omega has the famous Seamaster collection, which was born in 1948, more than 70 years before Omega Ultra Deep set the world record for being the deepest point on the planet. And to be completely accurate, it all started even earlier, in 1932, when Omega created the Marine. The goal was to create a watch that was strong enough and waterproof enough to be worn underwater. With a double case, patented design, it was the world’s first diving watch aimed at non-professional divers, demonstrating impressive water resistance to a depth of 135 meters.

Then the Second World War came and turned everything upside down. During this global crisis, Omega made a commitment to support the timekeeping needs of the Allied Forces and supplied the UK MoD with over 110,000 watches. According to their technical characteristics, they had to be resistant to water, on the one hand, and to the effects of magnetic fields, on the other, so that they could be used by RAF Spitfire pilots.

The experience gained by Omega during World War II has been transformed into an elegant collection of casual watches. Reliable, rugged and water resistant, the first Seamaster watch (1948) with a solid case and thick temples was a rugged yet elegant sports watch.
When the war ended in 1945, Omega already had revolutionary experience in watchmaking. Over the next three years, she used her military knowledge to create a collection of watches for active, everyday people who yearn for life and adventure, who want to forget the hardships of war. The Seamaster collection, as it was called, combined an elegant look with a dynamic spirit and design, making it ideal for city, sea and country outings. It was Omega’s first original watch collection, proving that beautiful classic timepieces can be both durable and reliable at the same time. The Seamasters were also among the first watches in the world to use rubber gaskets, a technology originally used to seal submarine hatches.

Nearly 10 years later, Omega faced its next big challenge: the growing interest in ocean exploration. When the Seamaster 300 was launched in 1957, it couldn’t have been a better time. The advent of scuba diving made diving accessible to almost everyone and was coupled with a renaissance of scientific interest in the oceans, spearheaded and pioneered by organizations such as National Geographic and pioneering underwater explorers such as Jacques Cousteau.

The world was suddenly in need of a reliable watch that could safely escort divers to the bottom, showing exactly how long they would still have precious oxygen for their survival. It was then that Omega introduced its first watch for professional divers: it was equipped with an original high-pressure sealing system, as well as the first Omega diving bezel, which had a special safety system to prevent its unintentional rotation during a dive.

Seamaster 300 immediately attracted the attention of experienced divers. The technology combined with the easy to read display made it one of the most reliable diving watches of its time. His legacy has continued in the following years with several pioneering models such as the Seamaster PloProf, the Seamaster Professional Diver 300M and the Seamaster Planet Ocean, and the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep.
