Streaming service Apple TV + released a trailer “Sydney“, a documentary in production Oprah Winfrey about his life and career Sidney Poitier who died on January 6 at the age of 94.

The project, which will be shown in US theaters and on Apple TV+ on September 23, will be directed by Oscar nominee Reginald Hudlin. Focusing on one of the most important figures in film history, “Sidney” is a tribute to “the legacy of an iconic actor, director and activist in Hollywood and the Civil Rights Movement.”

Filmed with the help of members of the Poitier family, the documentary features interviews with Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Robert Redford, Lenny Kravitz, Barbra Streisand and Spike Lee.

Poitier became the first African-American actor to win an Oscar in 1964 for his role in Lilies of the Field. The actor rose to fame in Hollywood with his work in films such as Cry, The Beloved Country, Blackboard Jungle, Patch of Blue, and Raisins in the Sun.

In 2009, Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and in 1974, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in the United Kingdom.

Poitier held dual citizenship in the United States and the Bahamas and was asked by the island nation to become ambassador to Japan in 1997. In addition, he was the Ambassador of the Bahamas to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

In addition to acting, he has written several books, including an autobiography called The Measure of a Man. His second autobiography, This Life, published in 1980, deals with his childhood and emotional relationships.
