The deadline for an apology on Friday morning was requested and received by a 65-year-old citizen of Thassos who is accused of a great crime. Fire broke out on the island, in the region of Skala Potamia, as a result of which a large mountainous forest was burned.
It should be noted that yesterday afternoon the District Attorney of Kavala opened a criminal case against the defendant on the degree of a serious crime and charged him with intentional arson.
In addition, the defendant underwent a makeshift procedure yesterday regarding flammable materials that he illegally possessed and which were found in his car following an investigation by the police and fire authorities. The court sentenced him to six months’ suspended imprisonment and a fine of one thousand euros.
The 65-year-old man is being held at the Kavala police station and is expected to appear before an investigator again on Friday to testify.
