Johnny Depp made his directorial debut 25 years ago when he starred himself and Marlon Brando in 1997’s The Brave, which didn’t do well and although it was presented at the Cannes Film Festival, it didn’t make it into American theaters.

Now Depp is back in the director’s chair for Modigliani, which will be a tribute to the life of renowned Italian artist Amadeo Modigliani, co-produced by Al Pacino and Barry Navidi.

Based on a play by Danny McIntyre and adapted for cinema by Jerzy and Marie Kromolovsky, the film follows the life of a painter and sculptor in Paris in 1916. Feeling like a failure, the film will focus on a 48-hour period in the artist’s life that will change his life and establish him in the art establishment as one of the greatest painters.

Production on the film is estimated to begin in Europe in the spring of 2023, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with the names of the actors who will play in it yet to be announced.

Johnny Depp said he was honored to bring Modigliani’s life to the big screen. “It was a life of great difficulty, but in the end it triumphed – a universal human story that all viewers can understand,” he added.
