After the ongoing judicial reform was overshadowed by several scandals, on August 15, the Verkhovna Rada appointed lawyer and well-known anti-corruption fighter Roman Maselka to the main judicial body – the High Council of Justice, Kyiv Independent reports. .
The parliament also supported the candidacy of law professor Mykola Moroz, who meets the high standards of ethics and integrity required for this position, according to anti-corruption authorities.
Civil society unanimously supports Maselka, arguing that he is suitable for this position.
However, as officials have thwarted recent efforts to reform the judiciary by approving tainted nominees to top judicial posts, skeptics say Maselka’s appointment could be a cover for failed reform because he will not be able to change the system on his own.
The Supreme Council of Justice consists of 21 members and appoints, dismisses and punishes judges.
Under current procedures, the Ethics Council approves or rejects by veto nominees to the High Council of Justice based on standards of integrity.
After the ethics council has spoken, candidates are nominated by parliament, the president, the congress of judges, the congress of lawyers, the association of prosecutors and the association of law schools based on specific quotas.
