Salman Rushdie’s family said on Sunday they were “overjoyed” that the British writer was no longer associated with cars and that his sense of humor remained “intact” despite the severity of his injuries, AFP reported.
“My father remains in hospital in critical condition and receiving intensive care,” his son Zafar Rushdi wrote in a tweet purported to be posted on behalf of the family.
“We are very glad that yesterday (Saturday – no) he was disconnected from the ventilator and oxygen supply, and he was able to say a few words,” he added.
“While his injuries are serious and life-changing, his usual sharp and cheeky sense of humor remains intact,” continued Zafar Rushdie, who runs a London-based public relations agency.
He thanked the public who supported the “Satanic Verses” author during Friday’s attack in New York state, as well as the police and caregivers who helped him.
