A fire that wreaked havoc on the tourist island of Thassos in Greece was partially brought under control on Sunday, DPA reports, Agerpres reports.

However, local authorities said the danger had not been eliminated as the fire was still burning in several places.

Four firefighting planes, five helicopters, hundreds of firefighters, volunteers and military units are working to extinguish the fire, the fire department said.

The island in the northern part of the Aegean Sea is covered with thick forests, and the flames caused chaos in the impassable terrain.

According to the civil defense forces, fires have covered more than 13,000 hectares of land in Greece this year.

Months of drought, high temperatures and strong winds have created favorable conditions for fires, meteorologists say.
