The Skala Potamia fire on the island of Thassos has been brought under control after a major outbreak in the early hours of Saturday that ignited mountain forests in a particularly inaccessible area.

From the early hours of the morning, aerial firefighting equipment continued to drop water while a strong firefighting force, dozens of volunteers and members of the Hellenic Rescue Group’s kaval branch battled the blaze to contain it.

Throughout last night, the ground fire forces made great efforts, despite the adverse conditions due to the inaccessibility of the terrain, to create ignition zones and prevent the spread of fire. However, their work was complicated by the fact that the fire constantly flared up.

Touching once again was the participation of residents and businessmen of the island, who offered food, water and juices to everyone who did business on the fronts of the fire.

Firefighters, army forces and members of volunteer groups will remain on the island for the next 24 hours and will monitor the risk of the fire re-igniting.
