Surveillance Case: Journalist T. Telloglu Testified to the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court

Journalist Thassos Telloglu testified to the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court for 3.5 hours Isidor Doyako, which is conducting a preliminary criminal investigation into the case of wiretapping against the president of PASOK-KINAL Nikos Androulakis and journalists Thanasis Koukakis as well as Stavrou Malihoudis.

As is known, the preliminary criminal investigation against Mr. Dogiakos does not concern the main wiretapping case against Mr. Androulakis et al., but that part leakage of confidential information contained in top secret government documents and relating to the declassification process.

It is recalled that Mr. Telloglu tweeted a few days ago that 2018 from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ telephone was privately tappedwhile he was the leader of the official opposition.

“I was called to testify, Mr. Dogiakos told me what is the context of the investigation into how secrets relating to national security were revealed and whether they were disclosed in cases of legal meetings.

I didn’t know what to tell him about this, and I talked about the research we’ve done in recent months on the inside story about the use of a predator, that is, software that controls mobile phones. And I explained to him that, in our opinion, this works in addition to legal investments, that is, both are used.

Mr. Dogiakos asked me a question about a post I made about the prime minister, and I told him that the problem of services that wanted to get such software is much older than it is today. This intensified after 2020. The people who played the role before are the same people today, and if we want to know what has been done with legal investments in the past, then all the government has done is change the law that was voted in March 2021 to to retroactively prohibit persons under surveillance from asking a judge for information, a right that existed until 2021 and has since been abolished.”

“There were indications that his phones were not protected, as there were instructions from the KPD in 2017. Greek agencies have been trying to buy this software since 2013, we found the efforts of Greek agencies and there was a huge leak in 2015. on the wikileaks of the Italian company, where all negotiations with the Greek government took place from 2013 to 2015. So we are talking about something that is not current, just an exposure that exists today, and the fact that they are used in combination gives a new quality to the problem. Mr. Dogiakos will do his job and I hope we will do ours, there is still room for research.”

“Greek agencies, we have evidence that they are trying to buy this software older than 2013, this software was not bought for reasons unknown to me. There were telecommunications security complaints in 2017 and 2018 that were not just about Mr. Mitsotakis. There is no and cannot be a result on these complaints, since there is a law of 2021. The law of 2021 has retroactive effect, i.e. it also applies to communications made before the law, so the discussion comes to a standstill if this law is not will be changed.

The choice in favor of buying the Predator was not initially made, the first appearances of missiles concerned another Pegasus program, which “burned down” in 2018. And “Pegasus”, as the European Parliament says, offers certain guarantees, such as For example, it leaves the locks open, i.e. power can come and demand locks, and a predator has no such thing. It is discredited and more expensive, and of course has a much greater detection capability afterwards, perhaps for this reason it is preferable. I don’t know if he has this system or if he buys services from someone who has it, or if someone sells services.

Because the predator can be sold together with a phone series, that is, it can sell 10 phones a month, or someone sells such services.

As in the case of Thanasis Koukakis, so in the case of Nikos Androulakis, a combination of two things was used: legal wiretapping and the introduction of illegal software. For Mr. Androulakis, when he did not click on the link, there was a trial. With regard to Koukakis, who followed the link, the hearing was stopped when he complained about the legal link, and his monitoring was stopped.

I was asked to name specific people. These persons stem from the composition of the companies. Indelexa is known for playing an important role in Greek police procurement. Between them there are joint-stock relations.

“I’ve seen similar links on other phones, I don’t know if they checked it. I saw such connections on phones when investigating the ins and outs of non-political persons, but I didn’t see political ones.”

“We are not going to enter into any logic of compensation,” New Democracy said in a statement regarding the publication and statements by journalist Tasos Telloglu about phone monitoring during the 2017-2018 period.

“Mr. Telloglu today repeated the monitoring of Mr. Mitsotakis’s phone, as well as other phones in 2017-2018. He said the same thing in his post a few days ago. He must give specific information to the prosecutor of the Supreme Court, to whom he testified today. We are not going to enter into any logic of compensation,” New Democracy reports and adds: “The government, as the Prime Minister said, will act decisively and take all measures to strike a balance between the security of the country and its citizens.” and protecting fundamental principles that protect privacy and confidentiality of communications.”
