Families of the victims of the terrorist attack at the Munich Olympics will boycott this year’s events in Germany, which mark the 50th anniversary of the tragedy, believing that the offer of compensation from the German authorities is insufficient, AFP reported, taken by Agerpres.

In a letter sent to Bavarian regional president Markus Soder, the families of the 11 Israelis who died during the 1972 Munich Olympics said they “decline the invitation to participate” in the September 5 commemoration.

The authors of the letter ask the German authorities to publicly apologize for “all mistakes” and “lies”, “fair compensation” and “open all” archives.

On September 5, 1972, eight members of the Palestinian organization Black September broke into the Israeli delegation’s apartment in the Olympic Village, killing two Israeli athletes and taking nine other members of the delegation hostage in the hope of exchanging 232 Palestinian prisoners. .

The intervention of the German security services at the Fürstenfeldbrück military base, about thirty kilometers from Munich, ended with the deaths of all the hostages, as well as a West German policeman, a bloody outcome for which the West German authorities are considered partly responsible. Five Palestinian aggressors were killed.

Anki Spitzer, a spokeswoman for the families of the victims, told AFP that German authorities had given the green light to the first two requests, but still refused to provide the families with compensation that met “international standards”.

Berlin would offer ten million euros, which includes about 4.5 million already paid in 1972 and 2002, and a new total of about 5.4 million euros to 23 direct members of the victims.

According to her, the families shared the equivalent of three million euros as a “humanitarian gesture”.

“Accepting responsibility is not just words, it has a price. We would go to a ceremony if they would open their hearts and say … we apologize and we will compensate you for 50 years of abuse,” he added Spitzer, calling the proposal ” offend” Germany.

The families of the victims have asked Israeli President Isaac Herzog to boycott the Munich ceremony, added the widow of Andriy Spitzer, the Israeli fencing coach who died in the attack.

The Israeli presidency did not respond to AFP’s request for comment on Thursday.
