Several explosions rang out near the village of Novofedorivka in Crimea.
The Ministry of Defense of Russia said that the explosions at the military base were caused by the detonation of aviation ammunition and reported that there were no casualties after the explosion at the Novofedorivka military air base, reports the Russian agency RIA Novosti with reference to Reuters.
The Russian military also stated that there was no shelling and military equipment was not damaged.
The Institute for the Study of War reported that Russia denies that Ukrainian forces struck Crimea in order to avoid admitting “the ineffectiveness of Russian air defenses.”
A US think tank said on Tuesday that Moscow had little interest in blaming Ukraine for the bombings at a Russian-controlled air base in Crimea for reasons similar to the sinking of the Russian cruiser Moskva. Ukraine does not comment on the causes of the explosions, Kyiv Independent reports.
Two witnesses told Reuters there were at least 12 explosions of varying intensity within a minute. Three were particularly strong.
According to the Russian news agency TASS, the military base is used by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
There is a ground-based training complex for taking off and landing naval aircraft. One of only two simulators of its type in Russia, the complex is an airfield with a steel airfield in the shape of a ship’s deck. The dimensions of the airfield are equivalent to the flight deck of the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, TASS notes.
