After the last visit of Gerhard Schröder to the Kremlin, numerous Russian mass media presented the former German chancellor as the savior of Europe from the cold winter and a mediator in the war in Ukraine, writes Deutsche Welle.
Germany will freeze. And what else will freeze if the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline is not put into operation. Russian President Vladimir Putin would have recently received such information from his German friend Gerhard Schröder, at least if we are talking about the name of the largest Russian tabloid. Moscow Komsomolets (MK). For his part, Putin “explained in detail to the guest what the current situation is and how it can be improved.” Moskovska Gazeta praises Schroeder for the fact that, immediately after the meeting with Putin, he would have presented the arguments of the head of the Kremlin to the German media and that he “would have asked the German government to open the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.”
From the same source, Schroeder would find Putin’s arguments convincing, as the Russian tabloid happily summarizes: “In an interview with the German press, he followed Putin’s arguments and blamed Siemens for the existing problems (with gas supplies to Europe – ed.). Note).”
“Very convenient cooperation”
The religiously conservative Post Ţargrad explained that Shroeder had given up his business ties in Russia under pressure from an unnamed “European lobby group”. However, now Tsargrad considers the ex-head of the German government as a mediator. And he praises him like this: “Gerhard Schröder is one of the most important “friends of Putin” in Europe, as the Western press has presented him for many years. In fact, this means that he could very comfortably cooperate with the ex-chancellor of Germany.”
The RIA Novosti news agency, which publishes many opinions, refers to a reader’s letter addressed to the German daily newspaper Die Welt, in which Schroeder also boasts, writing: “Germans are delighted with his words about Putin.” The same article also draws comparisons with Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is not favorable to the current chief executive in Berlin. And here they would quote German readers who would urgently demand the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
“Speaking is better than silence”
The newspaper “Izvestia” emphasizes Schroeder’s loyalty to Putin and writes: “The former chancellor refused to apologize for his friendship with Putin.” It is better to speak than to remain silent, he writes further – the situation in Ukraine can be resolved with the help of diplomacy. The Kremlin would be ready for peace talks, the newspaper quotes the former chancellor of Germany and criticizes, referring to Schröder’s words: “However, European countries, including Germany and France, are not doing enough for this.”
The Internet portal Deita.ru asks in its headline: “Putin’s friend” came to Moscow to save Germany and complete a special operation?” Schroeder allegedly came to Moscow to save the Germans from the “horror of frost” from winter and act as a mediator in the conflict in Ukraine. In the case of Russian-Ukrainian peace talks, the Kremlin would probably make concessions only if German Prime Minister Scholz agrees to end military aid to Ukraine in return.
“When Germany fulfills the wish of the USA to supply weapons to the Ukrainian army, these weapons are used to kill Russian soldiers. And in this case, no economic interests outweigh the value of human lives. Moreover, it is impossible to turn a blind eye to the confiscation of assets of Russian state and private companies” , — the Russian author writes and expresses the hope that the long-standing friendship between Putin and Schröder will help speed up the organization of such negotiations: “Schröder enjoys a high level of trust in Germany (…) and is part of the politicians with whom Putin prefers to communicate.”
