One of the reactors at Ukraine’s Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which is under the control of Russian forces, has been shut down, the Ukrainian nuclear power company said Saturday, following attacks blamed on each other by Kyiv and Moscow.
“After the attack on the station, one of the three operating reactors activated an emergency protection system, which stopped,” the Energoatom NAEC said in a Telegram message.
According to the sources cited, the explosions “severely damaged” the nitrogen-oxygen station and “ancillary building”. “There remains a risk of leakage of hydrogen and radioactive substances, as well as a high risk of fire,” the company said.
“The bombing (…) created a serious risk for the safe operation of the plant,” Energoatom continued, but said it continued to generate electricity and that Ukrainian personnel continued to work at it. (source: AFP)
