1919-1922 – Historical references with the letter “K”: partisan movement in the city of Chania.

A response from Chania in Kathimerini dated November 26, 1921, mentioned a rebel movement taking place there: “Armed people gathered in front of the city of Chania tried to penetrate into it at night. Many shots were fired after the guard and the casualties among the rebels were counted. The rapid strengthening of security contributed to the elimination of the rebels and the restoration of calm in the city. Looting continues in the countryside. The militants are expected to retreat quickly. More decisive action is expected from the government.”

He then noted that “Venezelian and government politicians of the island, in a joint statement, condemn the movement, characterizing it as destructive to the country in the current particularly critical national circumstances.” And in conclusion: “The Government has decided, as stated yesterday by the Minister of the Interior, Mr. Stais, not to put into effect the first stringent measures taken regarding the declaration of martial law in Crete and the implementation of the deportation provisions of the Plundering Law.”

This exile was directly related to the cause of the movement, which consisted of “fugitives, recalcitrants, deserters”. It was because of the small reaction of the Cretans (especially on the western side of the island) to the military service announced in 1921 in Crete that the Law on Robbery was proclaimed (without direct implementation), which provided for the transfer of relatives of those who did not obey. An armed rally followed in Chania, which led to the abolition of the decree, but not to the recall of the naval command sent to the city. On November 20, there was a new insurrectionary movement, which “K” spoke about, which will end after three days of clashes with the retreat of the rebels into the mountains.

There were also several publications in the same newspaper regarding the response of France to the message sent to her by Great Britain about the Franco-Kemal treaty, as well as disagreements over a new international conference: “My Lord Curzon limits the discussion to the Eastern problem, since this was created by the Treaty of Bouillon, Bryan supports the need to learn German.”1919-1922 - Historical leaflets with the letter
