According to available data, over 374,000 digital IDs and 287,000 digital diplomas have been issued so far.
The new digital identity cards and driver’s licenses are digital documents issued through gov.gr and are fully equivalent to paper documents for any legal use within Greece. They are not international travel documents.
To create a digital ID and driver’s license, you need your personal TaxisNet codes and a verified EMEP mobile phone number. An Internet connection is required to use the application.
The steps to install and use the application are reminded:
1. App installation and citizen authentication
The Gov.gr wallet is already available in the iOS and Android software app stores and its use will be possible in parts according to the last digit of the citizen’s TIN, starting today with the number 1, on Thursday 2 and so on. .. In addition, citizens can download the application through the wallet.gov.gr page. To securely access the application, the citizen is first identified using codes on Taxisnet, and then by entering a one-time password (OTP – One Time Password), which is sent to the mobile phone number, whose ownership is confirmed by the citizen. To do this, before applying, a citizen must:
- or have registered your mobile phone number with the National Communications Register (NMR) via notify.gov.gr,
- or have their signature digitally certified through gov.gr (responsible statement, authorization, digital document certification, private agreement).
After authentication, the citizen is asked to give permission to receive notifications from the application, which are necessary for its operation due to the consent mechanism in case of verification of a digital document. In addition, he has the option to choose to activate the easy access (quick login) feature, which is provided according to the specifications of each device.
2. Making and keeping copies
After entering the application environment, a citizen can create and save a digital copy of his identity card and / or driver’s license in a few clicks. First, he chooses which document he wants to issue, and then receives a one-time password (OTP – One Time Password) via SMS, which he enters into the application. Immediately after that, the document is created and saved in the application and in the mobile phone wallet. The same process is repeated again for each new version of the copy.
3. Digital copy details and authentication
Digital copies of the Gov.gr wallet contain all the information contained in police licenses and driver’s licenses, respectively. They also include a QR code and a unique document code that verifies their authenticity. In particular, with regard to the digital copy of the driver’s license, the photo to be displayed is taken from the Greek Police Police Identification Registry, so it will be the same as that of the Police Identity Card and not necessarily the same as that of the Police Identity Card. that from the driver’s license.
The authenticity of each digital copy is confirmed by its QR code. As soon as someone scans a citizen’s QR code through the same Gov.gr Wallet app, the latter receives a notification from the app to give consent to the controller to verify their information. After the citizen approves the check, a six-digit code appears on the application screen, which he must dictate or show to the verifier, who, in turn, enters it on his device. After the process is completed, then and only then the digital copy of the data is displayed once and only on the controller device, without the possibility of saving.
4. Ability to quickly check
The citizen has the option to select the quick check feature (quick scan) at any time. Through this specific feature, the citizen essentially grants “pre-authorization” for the next and only check if it occurs exclusively within the next five minutes. By displaying a quick scan QR code, verification is faster as the verifier has direct access to the citizen’s data. Thus, the citizen can be served more directly, especially in cases where there is a congestion or speed is required, for example, for example. entrance to concerts, planes, etc.
5. Ability to sign documents on docs.gov.gr
Finally, through the Gov.gr wallet, a citizen can sign documents faster and more securely through docs.gov.gr. In particular, if a citizen has installed the application on his mobile phone and saved his police ticket, he will be able to choose and approve the issuance of a digital document through the application instead of receiving a one-time code (OTP – One Time) using an SMS password).
6. Loss or replacement of physical certificates and device loss
If a citizen reports the loss of his police card in person at the police station or through gov.gr, then automatically and immediately any digital copy issued will be cancelled. The same applies if a citizen reports the loss of a driver’s license at a police station, at the CEP or at the Department of Transportation of the respective region.
Where a new identity card or a new driver’s license is not issued due to loss, the digital copies of the old physical certificates are automatically canceled and the digital copies of the new certificates must be issued following the same procedure as their originals. problem.
In case of loss of the device on which digital copies are stored, a citizen can revoke the validity of stored digital copies through the appropriate service on gov.gr. Revoking physical copies does not invalidate the corresponding physical certificates.
7. How do I manage my digital identity and diploma?
- What if I lose or have my mobile phone stolen? I revoke the validity of digital documents through the appropriate service on gov.gr
- What if I lose or have my ID and license stolen? I report loss as I should, and through interoperability I systematically invalidate digital documents.
- If my ID or license is withheld? (for example, military service, withdrawal of a diploma due to violation of the Code of Conduct) The validity of the digital document is canceled (if I have already created it) or I am deprived of the possibility of issuing it from the moment the organization that temporarily stores the document declares it in its system
- How are my digital and physical documents deleted? As soon as I submit a digital document, it is entered into the system of the institution that deletes it and is immediately canceled. If I do not have a physical document with me, I must submit it to the institution in accordance with applicable regulations (for example, in the case of a driver’s license, submission to AT within 3 days)
Necessary clarifications
The issuance of digital copies is allowed only if the citizen legally has the appropriate physical certificate. Therefore, in cases of temporary or permanent revocation or detention of an identity card and / or driver’s license, the registries running in the application are automatically updated so that the citizen does not issue, store or use the corresponding digital copies.
A prerequisite for using Gov.gr Wallet is to install the latest version of the application.
In addition, each citizen can only store digital copies on one device. If you issue and store a digital copy on a second device, the previous digital copies are automatically revoked.
Digital copies have the same validity in Greek territory as the corresponding physical certificates. Therefore, from today, citizens can present them instead of an identity card or a driver’s license. As an exception, in relation to transactions of citizens with credit institutions, with financial institutions and with providers of fixed and mobile communication services, electronic copies will become effective from October 1, 2022.
A digital copy of an identity card is not a travel document. Therefore, it can only be used on domestic flights and not on international flights or movements within the Schengen area.
Frequently asked questions and answers can be found in the app and on wallet.gov.gr. In addition, citizens can submit service and support requests at wallet.gov.gr/support.
