According to available data, over 374,000 digital IDs and 287,000 digital diplomas have been issued so far.

The new digital identity cards and driver’s licenses are digital documents issued through gov.gr and are fully equivalent to paper documents for any legal use within Greece. They are not international travel documents.

To create a digital ID and driver’s license, you need your personal TaxisNet codes and a verified EMEP mobile phone number. An Internet connection is required to use the application.

1. App installation and citizen authentication

2. Making and keeping copies

After entering the application environment, a citizen can create and save a digital copy of his identity card and / or driver’s license in a few clicks. First, he chooses which document he wants to issue, and then receives a one-time password (OTP – One Time Password) via SMS, which he enters into the application. Immediately after that, the document is created and saved in the application and in the mobile phone wallet. The same process is repeated again for each new version of the copy.

3. Digital copy details and authentication

Digital copies of the Gov.gr wallet contain all the information contained in police licenses and driver’s licenses, respectively. They also include a QR code and a unique document code that verifies their authenticity. In particular, with regard to the digital copy of the driver’s license, the photo to be displayed is taken from the Greek Police Police Identification Registry, so it will be the same as that of the Police Identity Card and not necessarily the same as that of the Police Identity Card. that from the driver’s license.

The authenticity of each digital copy is confirmed by its QR code. 6. Loss or replacement of physical certificates and device loss

If a citizen reports the loss of his police card in person at the police station or through gov.gr, then automatically and immediately any digital copy issued will be cancelled. The same applies if a citizen reports the loss of a driver’s license at a police station, at the CEP or at the Department of Transportation of the respective region.

Where a new identity card or a new driver’s license is not issued due to loss, the digital copies of the old physical certificates are automatically canceled and the digital copies of the new certificates must be issued following the same procedure as their originals. problem.

In case of loss of the device on which digital copies are stored, a citizen can revoke the validity of stored digital copies through the appropriate service on gov.gr. Revoking physical copies does not invalidate the corresponding physical certificates.

7. How do I manage my digital identity and diploma?

Necessary clarifications

The issuance of digital copies is allowed only if the citizen legally has the appropriate physical certificate. Therefore, in cases of temporary or permanent revocation or detention of an identity card and / or driver’s license, the registries running in the application are automatically updated so that the citizen does not issue, store or use the corresponding digital copies.

A prerequisite for using Gov.gr Wallet is to install the latest version of the application.

In addition, each citizen can only store digital copies on one device. If you issue and store a digital copy on a second device, the previous digital copies are automatically revoked.

Digital copies have the same validity in Greek territory as the corresponding physical certificates. Therefore, from today, citizens can present them instead of an identity card or a driver’s license. As an exception, in relation to transactions of citizens with credit institutions, with financial institutions and with providers of fixed and mobile communication services, electronic copies will become effective from October 1, 2022.

A digital copy of an identity card is not a travel document. Therefore, it can only be used on domestic flights and not on international flights or movements within the Schengen area.
