According to a weekly report from the National Public Health Organization (EODY), 25 cases of West Nile virus infection have been reported domestically.
Of these, nineteen (19) had CNS manifestations (encephalitis, meningitis, acute flaccid paralysis) and six (6) had mild CNS manifestations (eg, fever) or no CNS manifestations.
A total of 9 (nine) people were hospitalized: 5 (five) in intensive care and 4 (four) in regular beds. Four people did not need hospitalization, 12 were discharged from hospitals.
The mean age of patients with CNS involvement is 73 years (range: 38–85 years).
It is noted that 13 cases were recorded last week, which means that in seven days the number of infections has almost doubled.
The death of a patient infected with the virus has not been recorded.
With regard to the geographical distribution of cases, the vast majority of them are in Central Macedonia and mainly in Thessaloniki.
In particular, until 08/02/2022, cases of infection with the West Nile virus were registered in Greece, in settlements in the metropolitan part of Thessaloniki and in the regional units of Larissa, Imathia, Kilkis and Chalkidiki.
It is considered possible and expected that new cases will be diagnosed in the coming period (and subject to the awareness of healthcare professionals).
In the European Union and neighboring countries, according to ECDC, until 07/27/2022, in addition to our country, cases of infection with the ND virus were recorded in: Italy, Slovakia and Serbia.
It is worth noting that, according to a 2010 seroepidemiological study, for every (1) case of West Nile virus infection with CNS involvement, approximately 140 people are infected with the virus (with mild or asymptomatic symptoms).
