China has begun unprecedented military exercises around Taiwan

China’s People’s Liberation Army has begun military exercises, including firing live ammunition in the waters and airspace around the island of Taiwan, a day after Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, according to an announcement on Chinese state television. Training should end on Sunday at 12 o’clock at night.

Taiwan charges that the exercises violate UN rules, invade the island’s territorial space and represent a direct challenge to free air and sea navigation.

More than 20 Chinese warplanes entered Taiwan’s air defense space during a visit to the island by the speaker of the US House of Representatives after Beijing announced the start of “targeted military exercises” around Taiwan.

Beijing announced it was suspending imports of citrus fruits, chilled swordfish and frozen horse mackerel from Taiwan starting Wednesday.

China’s Ministry of Commerce also announced that exports of natural sand to Taiwan will also be suspended from Wednesday.
