
Japanese scientists succeeded for the first time using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create mental images of objects and landscapes created by the activity of the human brain, reports Xinhua.
A group of researchers from the National Institute of Quantum Science and Technology (QST) and other organizations managed to create raw images of a leopard with a mouth, ears and a specific pattern of spots, as well as objects such as an airplane with lights. bright tomatoes and wings, the Kyodo agency reported.
“Decoding the brain”
The technology, called brain decoding, allows visualizing perceptual content based on brain activity and could be used in medicine and social care, the researchers said.
During the study, participants were shown 1,200 images of objects and landscapes, and the relationship between their brain signals and the images was analyzed and quantified using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The same images were fed into a generative artificial intelligence system to examine their correspondence to brain activity.
According to researchers, this technology can be used in the development of communication devices and to understand brain mechanisms during hallucinations and dreams.
QST researcher Kei Majima said that people have used microscopes and other devices to see the world invisible to the naked eye, but they have not been able to penetrate the human mind.
Majima noted that this is the first time that people can look into another person’s mind.
