Last year at Christmas it was +18 degrees in the country, and this year it will be over +15 and there will be no snow. Those Christmases with frost and heavy snow remained far in the past, somewhere in the 80s. In Calafate on Christmas five years ago it was almost 19 degrees and in Calarasi it was 18 degrees in 2010. What do the temperature records look like on Christmas Day and the day before?

What Christmas was like in the 80s compared to the last decade

In the 80s, there were the last winters “like in the old days” with prolonged cold and a large layer of snow. Those winters are long gone.

Sibiu

Between 1981 and 1990, there were five Christmases with temperatures below -5 degrees and a minimum temperature of -15.5 C. Between 2011 and 2020, there were three Christmases with -5 degrees and a minimum temperature of -6.9 C. in the last 13 years, four times on Advent day it was more than 10 degrees

Bucharest

Between 1981 and 1990, there were five Christmases with a minimum temperature below -5 degrees, with a minimum temperature of -11.4 C. Between 2011 and 2021, there were also three Christmases with a minimum temperature of -5 degrees, with a minimum temperature of -6. 6 C. The changes are noticeable at higher altitudes, however: five of the last 11 Christmases have been above 10 degrees. Between 1980 and 1990 there was no maximum above 10 degrees.

Arad

Between 1981 and 1990 there were three Christmas days with lows below -5 C. There have been none in the last ten years.

IASI

Between 1981 and 1990 there were four Christmases with lows below -5 and only one in the last decade.

Mierkurya Chuk

Between 1981 and 1990 there were six days with temperatures below -5 C and only four in the last decade. There is an important comparison to be made here that shows how things have changed. For 20 years, Christmas in Mierkurya-Chuka has not been lower than -20 C (-27.5 C in 2001). In comparison, between 1981 and 2001, the night of December 25 was below -20 C seven times.

Constant

Seven times in the last 12 years, Christmas temperatures have exceeded +10 degrees, while between 1980 and 1990 there were only two occasions.

Vf Omu

The country’s coldest station had three years with temperatures falling below -15C at Christmas in the 80s and just one such low from 2011 to date.
