The European Commission today announced the creation of six new disinformation centres, now covering all EU countries.
The new nodes will be put into operation from the beginning of 2023 and will complement the existing eight nodes that have already been operating since 2021.
One of the new centres, MedDMO (Mediterranean Digital Media Observatory), will cover Greece, Cyprus and Malta.
Analysis and detection of disinformation campaigns
The new centers will become part of the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), an independent platform for fact-checkers, academic researchers and other stakeholders.
They will help build an interdisciplinary community to build a network capable of identifying and analyzing disinformation campaigns, organizing national or international media literacy events and other activities that support the fight against disinformation.
Six proposals, selected by a panel of independent experts, will receive EU funding of around 8 million euros under the Digital Europe programme.
