An unusually bright meteor lit up the Norwegian sky overnight from Saturday to Sunday and could be seen over much of the south of the country, the BBC and The Local reported, News.ro reported.
The fireball, caused by the burning of space rock in the atmosphere, scared the Norwegians, who began to call the police in concern.
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has announced that this is a regular occurrence, an annual meteor shower called the Northern Taurides.
The phenomenon is explained by the fact that the Earth often passes through regions rich in meteoroids (remnants of celestial bodies).
Thus, within a few hours, thousands and thousands of such objects will enter the atmosphere. Then we have the so-called “star showers”.
The most important such moments fall on April, August, November and December. When meteoroids enter the atmosphere at great speed, the air around them, as well as they themselves, ignite due to friction with the air.
The air heats up to a temperature of several thousand degrees, and what we see as a streak of light in the sky is called a meteor.
Quite rarely, a meteoroid does not burn up completely in the atmosphere and part of it falls to Earth. This is a meteorite, explains astro-urseanu.ro.
An unusually large meteorite lit up the sky of Norway, it was even seen over the capital Oslo, also in July last year.
