Coach Christian Streich will leave Freiburg

The German technician (58) has been working at the club since 1995, when he took over as a youth team coach. With the U19 team, he won the German championship three times (2008) and the German Cup, writes News.ro.

In the summer of 2007, Streich became the assistant head coach of the main team, and it was not until the 2011–2012 season that he finally became the head coach of the team.

During his tenure, Streich helped Freiburg become a top-flight Bundesliga side, qualifying for European competition several times and reaching the 2022 German Cup final, losing to Leipzig (1-1, 2-4 on penalties).

He is currently the third longest-serving coach in Europe’s top five leagues, behind Frank Schmidt (at Heidenheim from 2007/08) and Diego Simeone (at Atletico Madrid from 2011/12).

“I have thought about it for a long time and had many discussions, but I believe that after 29 years, the time is right to make room for new energy, new people and new opportunities.

During my time working at the club, I received hundreds of extraordinary experiences. This club is my life and I am grateful for the great love and support I have received here. I am looking forward to the future of this club and I know that very good decisions will be made and that everything will continue here as it has been for the past years and decades: always moving forward and keeping your head high, even when things have been difficult” – Christian Streich in a video published on Monday on the social networks of the SC Freiburg club.
