Marta Kostyuk reached the semifinals of the WTA 1000 tournament for the first time in her career, defeating Russia’s Anastasia Potapova in Indian Wells on Thursday.

Both players are ranked 32 (Kostiuk) and 33 (Potapova) in the WTA rankings, but the start of the match was very unbalanced.

In the first part of the match, Marta played almost perfectly and led with a score of 6-0, 3-0.

Anastasia, who played for Spartak Moscow a year ago in Indian Wells, made an impressive comeback (5-5), but lost her serve again.

Kostiuk won after 69 minutes of play, the score 6-0, 7-5.

• Anastasia won her first two matches against Marta (both in 2023): 6-1, 6-3 in Miami and (6)6-7, 7-5, 6-4 in Birmingham.

• In the semifinals, Kostyuk will meet the winner of the match Iga Sviatek (main favorite) – Caroline Wozniacki (204 WTA – former world leader and Australian Open 2018 champion).

• Thanks to the performance in Indian Wells, Marta Kostyuk ranks 26th in the WTA Live rating (the best rating in her career).

The BNP Paribas Open is a WTA 1000 tournament that takes place from March 6 to 17. The game is played on a hard surface and the total prize pool is $8,995,555. Titled champion – Olena Rybakina.
