Felipe Massa wants to admit he should have been F1 world champion in 2008

The former Ferrari driver hopes to get recognition that he should have been world champion in 2008 and financial compensation.

The 2008 title, the first of seven won by Lewis Hamilton, was decided on the edge, with the Brazilian trailing the Briton by just one point.

But Massa believes he was insulted at the Singapore Grand Prix, the 15th race of 18 on the schedule that year, which was won by Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Renault).

The Brazilian insists that in order for Alonso to win, the team ordered the other driver, Nelson Piquet Jr., to deliberately leave the track and drive his car into the barrier.

Alonso, who was only 15th on the grid, had just refueled at the time of the accident, and the intervention of the No. Safety Car allowed him to pass all the other drivers who took turns to pit.

Instead, Massa, who was leading the race at the time of the crash, had a horror stop as the Brazilian restarted with the fuel hose still attached to the car.

He finished 13th with no points, while third-placed Hamilton took valuable points in his title fight.

The following season, Nelson Piquet Jr. claimed that he caused the accident on purpose at the behest of his team.

And Bernie Ecclestone, the main boss of Formula 1 at the time, admitted in an interview last year that the Singapore Grand Prix hierarchy should not have been confirmed and that the world title should have gone to the Brazilian.

“Mr Massa is seeking a declaration that the FIA breached its rules by not immediately investigating Nelson Piquet Junior’s accident at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix and that, had he acted properly, Mr Massa would have won the World Drivers’ Championship that year “, the Brazilian law firm representing Felipe Massa said in a statement.

“Also, Mr. Massa is demanding compensation for significant financial losses caused by the failure of the FIA, in which Mr. Ecclestone and the FOM were also complicit,” added the lawyers quoted by News.ro.
