At the age of 100, Taghi Askari jumped into the water at the World Swimming Championships in Doha

Askari was symbolically awarded a gold medal for his jump.

The Iranian won silver and bronze medals at the first Asian Games in 1951 and has never lost his passion for the sport, News.ro reports.

“I have loved diving since I was a teenager to this day. From 1951 to the present, nothing has changed except my performances!” Askari told World Aquatics.

Askari first discovered diving in a pool near his childhood in Iran, where other children were.

This ignited his lifelong love of jumping and he went on to win Asian Games medals and national titles.

“When I competed at the national level, the last championships I competed in were when I was 41 years old. I got a gold medal at the national level and after that I said goodbye to the sport, but at least I won a gold medal” – Tagi Askari.

Since Askari started diving, the sport has changed tremendously.

“By the Games in Tehran in 1974, Chinese swimmers entered this beautiful sport and began to become more and more numerous, we could not catch them, because they remained at the same level from which they started” – Tagi Askari.

The Iranian will be among the participants in the Masters Aquatics World Championships, a competition held shortly after the elite world championships open to participants over 25 years of age.
