The President of the Organizing Committee (COJO), Tony Estanget, explained during the medal presentation on Thursday that the idea of the Eiffel Tower was “unanimous” and he thanked the Paris City Hall, the Society of the Eiffel Tower. , led by Jean-Francois Martins, for offering unused parts of the Eiffel Tower.
“To win a medal is to win a piece of history, and this Olympic medal is part of France, part of our heritage.” Martin Fourcade, president of the athletes’ commission at COJO, a former Olympic champion, said on Thursday.
The 18 grams of the Eiffel Tower included in each medal were recovered from the wreckage of the Iron Lady during the monument’s renovations and stored in a secret hangar on the outskirts of Paris.
Each medal has a diameter of 85 mm, a thickness of 9.2 mm, different weights, gold 529 grams, silver 525 grams, bronze 455 grams.
Chaumet Jewellery, owned by LVMH, a premium partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, developed and designed the medals in its workshops on Place Vendôme.
A connoisseur of special orders and prudence, Chaumet, born in 1780, created unique pieces for emperors, queens, maharajahs, actresses, dancers, but never sports medals.
The Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11, and the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8.
