With six stages left to play in the regular season, the fight for the play-offs in Ligue 1 is far from over. Only one team is certain of the playoffs, FCSB, a team that left its mark in the final phase of the championship with the implementation of the current competitive system, as we will see below. At Betano, we’ve analyzed the standings with six rounds remaining in the regular season to see which teams have the best chance of making the playoffs.

FCSB is the only team that did not miss the playoffs

In the 2015/16 season, the Premier League adopted a play-off and play-out competition system, and since then all participating teams have focused on finishing in the top six at the end of the regular season.

After the completion of the 30-stage regular season, the championship continues in two stages, with the top six teams competing in the playoffs and the next ten teams competing in the playoffs to avoid relegation.

Since the introduction of the playoff and play-out system, only one team makes it to the playoffs each time. It’s about FCSB, a team that has made eight out of eight possible playoffs but has yet to win a championship in the current format.

The red-blue team won the last title in 2015, when the championship was held in the classic format with bilateral matches.

Seven times in eight playoff appearances, FCSB finished second (a record) and once finished fifth.

Playoff champion

CFR Cluj and Universitat Craiova are next in the hierarchy of the teams with the most matches in the playoffs, with seven matches for each team.

The team from Gruy has so far shown that they know how best to adapt to the current competitive format, winning no less than five league titles in eight years with play-offs and play-outs.

On the other hand, the University of Craiova, although they missed the playoffs only once, in the very first season after the system change, managed only second place and three more places on the last step of the podium.

Farul Konstanz has made six play-off appearances and won two titles, the first under the name Viitorul (2016/17) and the second under the current name in the previous Ligue 1 season.

The third team to win the title in the current format is Astra Giurgiu, a team that has played in the play-offs five times and won the first tournament in the 2015/16 season.

First place rule at the end of the regular season

Seven times in the eight playoff seasons to date, the team that finished first at the end of the regular season has become the champion at the end of the championship. The only exception to this rule occurred in the 2020/21 season, when FCSB had a one-point advantage over CFR Cluj after 30 regular season matches, but after the playoffs, CFR Cluj won the title with a 9-point advantage.

FCSB leads the current season’s standings with a 9-point lead over CFR Cluj with six rounds remaining in the regular season. On Betano, atLeague 1 bets, the current order between the top two ranked players (1.FCSB – 2.CFR) at the end of the regular season is 1.60.

With 18 points between the top-placed Red and Blue and the seventh-place team with six rounds remaining, FCSB is confident of a ninth straight playoff berth in its bid for its first championship title in the current competition format.

CFR Cluj, Rapid, Universitat Craiova and Farul are big favorites to reach the playoffs, the fight for sixth place looks extremely attractive

No less than seven teams are currently aiming to finish in the top six at the end of the regular season. These are Sepsi (33 points), Germanstadt (33), University of Cluj (32), Petrolul (31), FKU Craiova 1948 (30), UTA Arad (30) and Ocellul (28). Of them, only Sepsi has played in the playoffs, three times so far.
