Day and scandal for Olena Ostapenko at WTA Brisbane. This time, the “victim” was referee Grand Slam champion Julie Kiendli.
Olena Ostapenko blamed the chief judge for Victoria Azarenka’s loss
In the quarterfinals, Ostapenko played a tense and sometimes dramatic match against Victoria Azarenka.
In the end, Vika won 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 after a match that lasted two hours and 31 minutes.
Trying to find the (most likely) culprit, Elena became angry with the chief judge and promised her that she would never judge again.
In the decisive set with a score of 5-4 in favor of the opponent, Ostapenko scolded Julie Kiendla for not seeing that the ball fell twice on the opponent’s court. The scandal was one step away.
“You make so many mistakes. I don’t want you refereeing my matches anymore. You will never judge me again. You are actually ruining my parties,” he shouted Ostapenko to the chief judge.
Answering a question at the end of the match about the scandal caused by her opponent, Victoria Azarenka simply joked: “When you play against Elena, sometimes it’s good to put on a helmet and try to stay there.”
Know:
The WTA quarter-final match in Brisbane pitted two Grand Slam champions against each other: Azarenka, the former WTA leader, triumphed at the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013, and Ostapenko lifted the trophy at Roland Garros in 2017.
