The Independent: “Rezvan Burleanu, the favorite of Oleksandr Ceferin’s opponents for the post of UEFA president”

“There is opposition to keeping Ceferin in power and there is new support for Romanian Rezvan Burlianu,” writes The Independent, adding: “Support for Burlianu comes amid controversial long-term plans for UEFA president Oleksandr Ceferin.”

Ceferin presented the plans to make changes to the UEFA statute at the meeting of the executive committee of the continental forum, which took place before the draw of the groups of the final Euro-2024 tournament. The amendment provides that the UEFA president can have more than three mandates.

According to The Independent, opponents of the statute change are led by Britain’s David Gill, a member of UEFA’s executive committee since 2013, and many involved see Rezvan Burleana, president of the Romanian Football Federation, as the best choice. for the presidency of the European Forum.

Ceferin hopes his proposal will be ratified at UEFA’s February congress in Paris, when he will need a two-thirds majority of the 55 members.

The Independent also notes that “in this context, Burlyanu is generating support. Heading the Romanian federation since 2014, he is considered an excellent and responsible administrator and also has a connection to football as the son of former Romanian first league footballer Gheorghe Burleanu. The 39-year-old Burleanu himself was a player at youth level, had a doctorate in organizational management and worked in Romanian politics, as well as in several UEFA working groups,” the article published by the British newspaper says.

A lawyer by profession, Ceferin was previously president of the Football Association of Slovenia from 2011 to 2016. He was first elected UEFA president in 2016 and his current term ends in 2027.

Rezvan Burleanu was elected as a member of the FIFA Council in April 2021, writes News.ro.
