Romania chose Würzburg as the training base for EURO 2024
The day after the draw, coach Edward Iordenescu and his assistant Ionel Gane, along with team manager Catalin Georgiou and press secretary Catalin Popescu, set off to see the training base options for the final tournament.
According to UEFA’s procedure, each team had to submit a list of 12 options, four for each region, by November 30, UEFA said.
Due to the fact that the tricolors will play one game in Frankfurt and one in Munich, Romania was assigned to the “Center-South” region. To select the 12 options provided by UEFA, the selection staff visited 15 training bases, hotels and training grounds across Germany.
After the drawing of lots and distribution by region, the selector visited 3 of the 4 bases selected for the “Center-South” zone in accordance with the previously established sequence. The flight from Hamburg, the location of the draw, took place on the morning of December 3. Thus, one of them was seen that day, and the other two months later, on December 4.
The coach believed that the best option for the Romanian national team was a training base in Würzburg, a city located 115 kilometers from Frankfurt, 270 kilometers from Munich and 300 kilometers from Cologne.
Apart from the hotel and training stadium conditions, as well as the fact that the tricolors will be able to train in a quiet corner of Germany, another important criterion was the availability of transport to travel to the cities where the matches will be played. The train station in Würzburg is located 4 kilometers from the hotel and has direct high-speed connections to all 3 cities where the tricolor will perform. Almost 1,500 Romanians live in Würzburg.
The hotel was opened in 2017
The Romanian national team will be accommodated during their stay in Germany at the Melchior Park Hotel, a 4-star hotel that will be used exclusively by the Romanian delegation: players, technical staff, medical staff, additional staff, support staff and FRF management.
All persons will be accommodated in single rooms. The three-story hotel has a spa center, a hot pool, a sauna, a cold pool, and a fitness room, which was opened in 2017.
Training ground: Würzburger Kickers stadium
During the European Championship, the “tricolors” will train at the “AKON Arena” stadium, 4 kilometers from the hotel. He belongs to Würzburger Kickers, the leader of the Bavarian region at the moment.
The team is also the record holder of the 2. Bundesliga. Between 2011 and 2016, it managed promotion from League 6 to the second tier of football, marking four promotions in five years. However, at the end of the 2016-2017 season, the club was relegated to League 3.
The stadium was last renovated in 2016 and has a capacity of 13,090 seats, 2,562 of which are located in the covered stands. It has a night and automated watering system. In 2006, it hosted the Ghana national team at the World Cup in Germany.
21 national teams have already qualified for Euro 2024, and the three that will complete the standings in Germany will go out of the Nations League playoffs.
