The WTA will not sanction players who will compete in the Northern Palmyra Trophies
The event is sponsored by Russian energy giant Gazprom and comes as Russia continues its war with Ukraine, Reuters reports.
“This event is not connected with the WTA, and we do not support its organization. Players compete on the WTA circuit as independent contractors and, at their discretion, have the option of participating in an off-season tournament without penalty.” WTA reported.
ATP representatives have not yet commented on this situation.
