General Motors (GM) is backing Andretti to become the 11th team in Formula 1, and the American manufacturer has signed an agreement with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to become an engine supplier from 2028, writes AFP.

Earlier this year, the American car team Andretti Global announced a partnership with General Motors through Cadillac, one of the GM brands, to try to integrate into the top class of motorsport in the coming years. But then nothing was said about engines.
Beginning in the 2028 season, “our new Andretti Cadillac FC team will be powered by a GM engine,” said Mark Reuss, president of General Motors.
“With our engineering and racing experience, we are confident that we will develop a highly efficient powertrain for the series and position Andretti Cadillac as a true team,” added Royce.
According to the group, the development and testing of the technology prototype is already underway, writes Agerpres.

Through its president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the FIA said it was “delighted” to learn GM had signed on as an engine supplier: “The presence of the iconic American brands Andretti and GM is good for the sport.”
The announcement comes just over a month after the FIA gave Andretti Cadillac the green light to become F1’s 11th team.
The team, whose bid is backed by former F1 driver Michael Andretti and his son Mario Andretti, the 1978 F1 world champion, is now awaiting approval from FOM, F1’s commercial rights holder, to enter the grid from 2025.
But the teams currently involved in the discipline are reluctant because of the financial impact that the presence of new teams will have on the distribution of profits generated by Formula 1.
According to specialist website Autosport, representatives of GM and Andretti will be present this weekend in Las Vegas for the penultimate round of the Formula 1 World Championship to “put pressure on FOM” to reach a deal.
If the nomination is accepted, it remains to be seen who will be the driver of the Andretti Cadillac team until 2028.
