Max Verstappen has scored more points than the entire Mercedes team this season (524 to 382) and RedBull’s dominance in Formula 1 has been unchallenged by rivals. However, there is hope for a more balanced season in 2024, or so Jenson Button believes.
Jenson Button believes RedBull will not dominate in the same way in 2024
A former world champion in 2009 (he pulled off a big surprise with a Brawn GP single-seater), Jenson Button is giving hope to those F1 fans tired of Max Verstappen’s victories on the race track.
The Brit believes that RedBull will not repeat this year’s dominance in 2024, and Button cites the good results of the McLaren and Mercedes teams in the recent period (they have come close to RedBull’s reference times) to support his claims.
“You know, there are a lot of big teams fighting for the top and one little mistake can drop you straight down to fourth place,” says Button, hinting that next season could bring a little more adrenaline for fans of the Grand Circus.
“Yes, it’s hard to catch RedBull, but look, there are teams that have come really close to it. The latter part of the season saw single-seaters such as McLaren and Mercedes battling closely with RedBull.
Max had that slight advantage, but his teammate (minus Sergio Perez) didn’t, so we could have a surprise next year.
I do not think that everything will be in favor of RedBull. This year was exceptional for them and I don’t think it will happen again next year.
That’s what this sport needs (without high-level competition), we think we need a bit of variation to win,” Jenson Button added.
On the dominance of RedBull in 2024
Second in the manufacturers’ standings, Mercedes scored 382 points, with Max Verstappen alone on 524.
Moreover, Mercedes and Scuderia Ferrari (in second and third places) together have fewer points than RedBull (the Austrians have 782 points, while both rivals have 744 together).
In 2023, RedBull won 19 out of 20 Grands Prix: two wins for Sergio Perez and 17 for Max Verstappen.
