He has authoritatively dominated the world of Formula 1 for several seasons, but it is surprising when it comes to the period when he is still seen behind the wheel in the Grand Circus. Max Westappen says he feels “in the sack” and doesn’t think he will be around Fernando Alonso (42) or Lewis Hamilton (38) in old age.
Max Verstappen hints that he may retire from Formula 1 in 2028
He mathematically won his third F1 world title in a while, and in Brazil he achieved his 17th win of the season (a record).
Verstappen has spoken about how long he will drive at the highest level, with the Dutchman hinting that he will wait out his contract with RedBull (which expires in 2028) before considering a step back from both worlds of F1.
In 3rd place when it comes to world championship crowns, Max says he would like to go for 7 (a record currently held by Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton) but that there is more to life than Formula 1.
“I’m very happy with what I’ve achieved,” Verstappen says, before adding: “At some point, quality of life has to come before success.”
“It seems to me that I live in a bag all the time, in a hotel. At the moment it’s good, I like to drive and above all I like to win. But when I get older, maybe one day I won’t want it anymore,” added Max Verstappen in an interview with TIME magazine.
If he were to win the world title in every subsequent season in which he is still under contract with RedBull, Westtappen could hypothetically reach eight world titles, which would make him the all-time record holder.
The Dutchman from RedBull is 26 years old.
