UEFA promises 2.5 billion euros in the new season of the Champions League: 2024-2025

Sport.es talks about the new format of the Champions League in football, a competition whose prize money will increase by 500 million euros next season.

According to the cited source, UEFA will allocate up to 2.5 billion euros for the next season.

  • Prizes for participation will increase from EUR 550.5 million to EUR 678.5 million.
  • Prizes for results are increased from the current 600.6 million euros to 925.3 million euros.
  • Next season’s market pool and coefficient prize money will be €863 million.
  • Romania’s position in the Champions League remains unchanged, although the number of teams will be increased from 32 to 36 teams. Thus, only the champion of the Super League will have the right to participate: he, as before, will go out in the first preliminary round.
  • From the current 32 teams, there will be 36 next year.
  • The group stage will disappear and each team will be guaranteed a minimum of 8 matches instead of the current 6 (a change intended to bring more money to the teams).
  • The top eight teams in the Champions League will automatically qualify for the round of 16, while the teams finishing 9-24 will play in two play-off stages. From here, the other eight formations will come out, which will complete the figure of eight.
  • Before the start of the season, a draw will be held, and all teams will be included in one ranking (top-8, 16 finals at once).
  • This draw is to determine who will play the teams in eight matches: four at home and four away.
  • For the draw, 36 teams will be divided into four groups of nine. Pot 1 will feature the overall champion and the top eight teams by odds. The champions of the strong countries and the winner of the Europa League will no longer have priority in urn 1.
  • Each club drawn will play against two teams from the 4 pots of the draw.
  • Teams in the final ranking from positions 25 to 36 are eliminated from Europe.
  • In the ranking of coefficients of the Champions League for the 2024-2025 season, Romania ranks 26th (20,500 points). The leader is England (109,570), followed by Spain (92,998), Germany (82,481) and Italy (81,926).
