Youssef Atal suspended by Nice – the Algerian is accused of apologizing for terrorism

On Saturday, Atal shared a video posted by Mahmoud al-Hasanat in which the Palestinian preacher asks God to “make a rainy day for the Jews” and “be with the people of Gaza who throw stones.”

The footballer quickly deleted the post and apologized on Instagram.

“It was not my intention to shock the world and I apologize. I strongly condemn any form of violence anywhere in the world and support the victims of war. I have never supported hate messages. Peace is an ideal in which I deeply believe” – Yusef Atal.

The Ligue 1 club announced on Wednesday that Atal had been suspended. The footballer will have to explain his position to the Disciplinary Commission of the French Championship and to the investigators. He is accused of anti-Semitic reaction and promotion of terrorism.

“It was decided to suspend Yusef Atal for an indefinite period. We would like to emphasize that the reputation and unity of OGC Nice is the result of the behavior of all its employees, which must correspond to the values that the institution defends.

Considering the nature of the content shared and its seriousness, the club has decided to immediately take the first disciplinary sanctions against the player, before those that may be taken by sports and judicial authorities” – Nice OGC.

The decision of the OGC Nice was made after “the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes and the mayor of the city of Nice reported the act of Atal, which violated article 40 of the code of criminal procedure. The prosecutor’s office opened a preliminary investigation on charges of terrorism and public incitement of hatred or violence because of a certain religion. The investigation has been entrusted to the Judicial Police Service in Nice.”
