Kateryna Makarova brought the surprise of the day at the Transylvania Open, a WTA 250 tournament held in Cluj-Napoca, the athlete from Russia defeated Kateryna Beindl of Ukraine in the first round.

Makarova, who is ranked 213 in the world, won in three sets against the 7th seed with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. The match lasted two hours and 20 minutes.

At the beginning of the match, Beindl (86 WTA) refused to take a picture with her opponent from Russia.

  • Makarova is only appearing in the main draw of the WTA tournament for the fourth time. Kateryna defeated Briana Szabo and Susan Bandecki in the qualification.
  • In the 1/8 finals, Makarova will meet the winner of the match between Patricia Sig (462 WTA) and Marta Matula (327 WTA).

Transylvania Open takes place from October 16 to 22 in Cluj-Napoca, it is played on closed hard, the tournament is part of the WTA 250 category, it has a total prize money of $259,303 and the title champion is Anna Blinkova.
