Oleksandr Zverev suffered three consecutive defeats in the ATP tournament, the third favorite of the tournament in Tokyo (500 points) lost in the first round to the Australian Jordan Thompson.

Oleksandr Zverev lost to Jordan Thompson at ATP in Tokyo

Thompson, ranked 60th in the world, needed an hour and 35 minutes to pull off the surprise of the day in Japan, 6-3, 6-4.

The difference in the first set was provided by Jordan’s break in the fourth game. Zverev (9 ATP) led 2-0 in the second set, but the Australian prevailed, winning twice in return.

  • In the next round, Jordan Thompson will meet the winner of the match between the American Ben Shelton (19 ATP) and the Japanese Taro Daniel (97 ATP, exit from qualification).
  • The former ATP No. 2, 2020 US Open finalist and Champions Tour winner in 2018 and 2021, Zverev has lost his last three matches, all in sets. The German lost to Daniil Medvedev (semi-final – Beijing), Roman Safiullin (second round – Shanghai) and Jordan Thompson (first round – Tokyo).

The Japan Open will be held from October 16 to 22 on hard, is in the ATP 500 category and has a total prize pool of $2,013,940. The reigning champion is Taylor Fritz, the American is also the top favorite in 2023.
