McKenna Kelly, the former gymnast’s daughter, explained that she can no longer breathe on her own and is asking people for prayers and donations to help cover her hospital bills. She said Retton was uninsured and “fighting for her life.”

At the 1948 Los Angeles Olympics, Retton became the first non-Eastern European gymnast to win gold in the individual all-around after scoring a perfect 10 on vault. Romanians Ekaterina Sabo and Simona Pauka completed the podium.

Retton also won two silver medals in the team event and vault, and two bronze medals on bars and floor at the Olympics, all while still in high school.

Her Olympic success led to a surge in popularity, and Retton became a household name. She was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportswoman of the Year and appeared on Wheaties cereal boxes after her triumph.

She also won the individual all-around at the America’s Cup in 1983, 1984 and 1985 before retiring in 1986.

In 1997, she was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
