Hong Kong’s main favorite Azarenka got off to a great start and won the first set 6-2.
The WTA leader (in 2012) and winner of the Australian Open (2012 and 2013) Victoria complained of problems with her left leg (around the knee), lost the second set with a score of 6-3 and decided that she could not continue the match.
Leila Fernandez (60 WTA, US Open 2021 finalist) will play Mirra Andreeva (50 WTA) in the second round, after the 16-year-old Russian defeated Ukrainian Diana Yastremska (97 WTA, Hong Kong title) 6-4, 6 -3.
