Russian athletes will be able to compete in next year’s Paralympic Games in Paris after the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) voted against suspending Russia’s membership due to the war with Ukraine, DPA reports.
The unexpected result was that 74 member associations opposed the full suspension “for breach of constitutional obligations”, with 65 in favor and 13 abstaining at the IPC Congress in Bahrain.
A second vote decided that the Russians would be able to compete “individually” or as “neutral athletes”.
A separate vote is planned for the fate of Belarusian athletes, who were also suspended for their role as an ally of Belarus with Russia in the war in Ukraine, writes Agerpres.
Russia invaded Ukraine a few days before the 2022 Winter Paralympics in Beijing, where Russia and Belarus were expelled on the eve of the opening ceremony.
The Paralympic Games in Paris will be held from August 28 to September 8, 2024.
