Corinne Laframboise, who was preparing for the most important match of her career, thought her doctor was joking when he texted her to tell her she was three months pregnant, the BBC reports.
Corinne Laframboise found out she was pregnant just six days before her career match
The athlete from Canada was going to fight Ryan Guerrero for a contract with the UFC (the largest mixed martial arts organization in the world).
After receiving the doctor’s message, Laframboise went about his day as usual (he works as a hygienist in Montreal). At the end of her shift, she answered the doctor and asked if he had any message for her before the match, which was only six days away.
Then he got a call and was told that he wouldn’t be able to fight.
“Corin, this is no joke. You’re pregnant, and judging by your hormones, you’re probably more than three months along. Or you’re having twins.” said the doctor.
Corinne Laframboise: “I sprained my ankle and couldn’t train. I believe that everything happens for a reason”
Laframboise, 34, admitted he was speechless when he heard the news. She trained for weeks before the fight, but miraculously she didn’t. And now she believes that her child was protected by a “greater force”.
“I was in the car waiting for my fiance, and it felt like the whole world stopped – we didn’t expect that. I was like, “What the hell? Twins!”?
The next day I had a scan to see if it was a baby or a doctor’s mistake and it was an only baby. I heard a heartbeat, I saw two hands, two legs. Now we know it’s a girl. And she is healthy, there are no problems.
The first weekend I was supposed to train, I sprained my ankle two days before. My leg was still blue and I couldn’t train.
I swam, I did more things. That’s why I didn’t get hit in the stomach. So I think that life caused this situation because all events… I think that everything happens for a reason” – Corinne Laframboisequoted by the BBC.
Corinne Laframboise: “I thought I felt it because of the training”
Laframboise admits she had pregnancy-related symptoms, but she dismissed them as side effects of her training.
“I haven’t had my period, but it’s happened to me a lot, when you increase your level of training it’s not a big problem. I threw up the morning after, but I thought it was because of the diet.
I usually like peanut butter and steak, but this time I said “I don’t want peanut butter…” and I wanted lemon.
Things like that were weird, but I think it was because of the camp. I’ve been working out more and maybe the diet made me feel that way, but then I found out it was pregnancy.
I can’t tell you right now if I’ll make it to the UFC. I want to focus on the baby and what will happen. At best, maybe I can keep fighting.
I know I’m made for the UFC. I’m strong enough to be there, I like beating people in the first and second round, I put on a good show, I’m in high demand. I will see how it will be with the child, but I will not close the door” – Corinne Laframboise.
