Novak Djokovic became the king of the US Open for the fourth time in his career after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the grand final at the Arthur Ashe Arena. The Serb won the first set without emotion, the second set took an hour and 45 minutes for the tie-break (he also saved the set point), and in the third set the Russian could not keep up the pace. The score was 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 after three hours and 17 minutes of play, and Nole equaled the record of the legendary Margaret Court (24 Grand Slam titles won).

Novak Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev in the US Open 2023 final

Djokovic (36 years old) made a great start to the match and won the first set, making the only break in the second game.

The second set was eventful. The Serb incredibly saved the first break point when the Russian was leading 4-3.

Medvedev tried to take advantage of Djokovic’s physical problems (he choked several times) at 6-5, in a game in which the future world number two double-faulted. Faced with a long lap that could have given him the set, Daniil made a surprise decision and the winner was decided in a tie-break.

The Russian was the first to break a mini-break, but Djokovic had more nerve (despite an impressive point won by Medvedev at 4-4), served brilliantly at 5-5, and the set ended with a ball that Daniil sent into the net: 7- 6(5).

Medvedev called a medical timeout to get his left shoulder treated and looked blank for several minutes while Djokovic took a break in the locker room.

Medvedev fell in the third game of the third set and refused Djokovic’s help, wanting to get up on his own.

Novak emerged victorious from a series of three consecutive breaks (he won twice on the return) and Daniil could not stop the Serb on his way to a new Grand Slam title: 6-3.
