After making history in the round of 16 and knocking out Igu Svyatek, Jelena Ostapenko stopped in the quarters at Flushing Meadows.
Ostapenko, a first-time US Open quarter-finalist, suffered a crushing setback against Coco Gauff in a match in which she managed to win just two games.
At the press conference at the end of the match, Yelena tried to explain the sharp failure she suffered in front of the American, but said that she was surprised by the length of the controversy.
“Given that I played in the night session (Sunday), I think I should have played again at the same time or later because you don’t have much time to recover.
Even if there is a day off in between, you still have to train, do your work, treat yourself, etc. So I think it was better for her because she was playing much earlier in the day than I was playing in the night session.
When I asked this question the day before, I was pretty sure I’d be playing in the night session because that’s what I was told. When the schedule came out, I saw that I was playing in the first game, and I was surprised.” said the Latvian.
