At the press conference, Iga stated that he does not know what happened during the match at the Arthur Ashe Arena. The Pole won her first 50 matches this year, in which she took the first set, but the Latvian managed to fight back on Sunday.

“She always plays well against me, I don’t know how to explain it, it’s always been like that. I’m surprised that my level has dropped so much because usually when I play bad, I play bad at first and then I manage to come back. This time it was the other way around.

I really don’t know what happened to my game, I suddenly lost control. I just need to analyze what happened, I still don’t understand why I started making so many mistakes.

It means a lot to be number one in the world for so long, it was a great stage, but the last part was exhausting. I have to do what Roger, Novak or Rafa did: just focus on the tournaments and not the ranking.

I don’t usually look at numbers, even though I love them. I would like to increase this record a little more, when I was young I always dreamed of breaking records, but I already did it, becoming the first Polish woman to win a Grand Slam.

When you lose the WTA No. 1, it’s normal to be sad, but the great players always go back to work with time to focus on the right things. This is how you manage to develop. I feel like I’m progressing as a player despite this weird game today.

I would not call it a relief that I lost the first place in the WTA ranking. There are many things I now know I should have done differently. Maybe I’m not yet ripe for it.

I try not to think about these things so much, but sometimes when you force yourself not to think about them, the result is just the opposite. I am very happy that I am surrounded by smart people, they tell me what to do, they guide me.

Next time I’m in a situation like this I’m going to do a few things differently because it was a little stressful and it shouldn’t have been. Tennis in general is stressful, but I have to make the most of what I have.

I’m definitely not happy with my performance at the Grand Slams in 2023, at least on the fast courts. But overall, I think we’ve done well this season, staying at a consistent level.

I admit I’ve lost games I shouldn’t have. But yeah, I’m glad I have some training time because I really need it. I’m glad I have time to reset, come home for a while and enjoy the track from a different perspective” – Iga Svyatek.
