Carlo Mazzone, the legendary coach who spent 792 games on the benches of Serie A teams, has died at the age of 86, according to the press in Italy.

As a footballer, Mazzone played for Roma, SPAL, Siena and Ascoli.

He began his coaching career in 1968, later coached the teams “Ascoli”, “Fiorentina”, “Catanzaro”, “Bologna”, “Lecce”, “Pescara”, “Cagliari”, “Roma”, “Napoli”, “Perugia”, “Brescia”. The last time he sat on the bench of “Livorno” (season 2005/2006).

In 1998, he won the UEFA Intertoto Cup with Bologna.

“Sir Carletto” has trained big names such as Roberto Baggio, Pep Guardiola (the Iberian has admitted that Mazzone is his mentor), Andrea Pirlo, Luca Toni, Igli Tare and many know him as the one who launched Francesco’s career Totti (“the only captain” of the AS Roma team).

Mazzone will also go down in football history with the sprint he made in the match between Brescia and Atalanta. Leading 3-1, Brescia (his team) equalized through Baggio and Carlo raced into Atalanta’s goal.
