Both players had to play with a special connection: several strings were missing and they could only hit the middle part of the racket.

The tiebreaker was played to 10 and Roone won.

At the Toronto Masters, Rooney suffered a first-round loss to Marcos Giron, while Alcaraz lost his quarterfinal match to Tommy Paul.

Carlos and Holger have met three times on the ATP circuit, and the Iberian leads 2-1.
