Daniil Medvedev unexpectedly crashed out of the ATP 1000 tournament in Toronto after losing in the quarterfinals to Australian Alex De Minaur (ATP 18) in just two sets, 7-6(7), 7-5.
Daniil Medvedev lost to Alex De Minaur at ATP in Toronto
With a good mood after winning five finals this year, the player from Russia stopped before the semi-finals.
The first set had a completely unexpected development with twists. Despite the fact that Medvedev led in the score 5-2, he did not manage the advantage and tied the score.
He again led 4-0 in the tiebreak, but eventually lost 9-7.
The second set wasn’t much different either, with the former world number one again leading 4-2, but De Minaur made a superb comeback to wrap up the match before another tie-break.
Alex De Minaur will meet the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovych Fokin (37 ATP) in the semifinals.
The National Bank Open is an ATP 1000 tournament that will be held from August 7 to 13. Its total prize pool is $6,600,000 and the current champion is Pablo Carreno Busta.
