Suspended after testing positive for Roxadustat at US Open 2022, Simona Halep appeared in the list of players registered in this year’s edition of the Grand Slam tournament, and the reason could be a regulation passage.
WTA rules and how Simona Halep can return to the field
According to journalist Daniel Radu, a player serving a disqualified period cannot be automatically registered for Grand Slam tournaments.
Thus, two options are possible, according to which the Romanian could return to the field as soon as possible:
- his suspension was finally lifted
- or received a suspension of less than one year.
In the event of a favorable verdict for Simona Halep, the ITIA is expected to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.
“Pursuant to the Integrity Rules, a player serving a disqualification or suspension under the TADP or TACP, as the case may be, is ineligible to participate in a tournament or be automatically entered into a WTA 1000 Mandatory or Grand Slam that continues during the period of disqualification or temporary suspension.
If a player appeals her suspension under the TADP or TACP, as the case may be, she may remain on the entry lists for any WTA tournaments in which she participated prior to the effective date of the suspension until the application deadline for qualifying for those tournaments WTA , after which the player will be automatically disqualified from the relevant WTA tournament or tournaments if she is still ineligible,” reads page 19 of the WTA rules.
Following her suspension from October 2022, Simona Halep was not automatically listed as a player at the Australian Open, Roland Garros or Wimbledon.
