
Hungary’s Amarissa Kiara Toth (20 years old, 548 WTA) became the “most hated player on the circuit” after her match with Shuai Zhang (34 years old, 45 WTA) in the first round of the tournament in Budapest.
The Bangkok-born player won the match after Shuai Zhang ended her career in tears following a referee’s decision which she felt was unfair.
Kiara Toth was overjoyed after Shuai Zhang was sent off, moments before she kicked a ball that caused the Chinese woman to lash out and argue with the referee, leading to another nervous breakdown for Zhang.
A day after those moments, Kiara Toth offered the first reaction, as unexpected as the gestures on the field.
“I don’t understand why she made such a fuss. He wanted to overturn the arbitrator’s decision. I really don’t understand why she didn’t accept it, she created problems for herself,” Kiara Toth said.
